Backstory

Lightyears from Earth, located in the star system Draconis, there exists the planet Drakulon. Drakulon was once a lush, futuristic paradise where rivers of crimson water flowed to feed its pacifistic, bat-like people. Unfortunately, centuries of a peaceful life were ended when one of the planet’s twin suns, Satyr, went nova. The resulting explosion burned away Drakulon’s upper atmosphere, rocking the planet with disasters. Earthquakes shook the land, volcanoes rose from below to spew lava, the mountains were reduced to arid deserts, and the once plentiful gardens and rivers dried up.

In only a few minutes, the science-based society of Drakulon had been completely destroyed, and without the water that once gave them life, its people slowly died. Drakulon’s council of scientists publicly decreed that this was a good thing, and that its people should take pride in dying a natural death. Few were willing to argue against them, save for one who would become the planet’s only survivor: a young woman named Vampirella.

When the drought began, Vampirella had watched as her parents and baby sister died in front of her, and as her life fell apart, she sought comfort in her lover Tristan. Realizing their time was short, the two wed and did their best to survive the great drought of their planet. But one day, as they walked through one of their home’s many deserts, Vampirella noticed an injured animal whose body spilled the same water they needed to survive. Placing her survival over the council’s rules against killing, Vampirella tried to convince her husband to feed on it, but he refused.

Before their argument could grow too heated, they noticed an alien ship passing overhead and went to investigate. Vampirella entered her bat form to get closer, but was shot at by a NASA astronaut. Tristan tried to defend his wife, but was seemingly shot to death, and Vampirella accidentally killed his attacker with a bite to the neck.

Upon realizing the astronauts were only acting in self-defense, Vampirella fled in shame, but Tristan returned to her sometime later. The remaining astronauts had mistakenly buried him alive in the remains of one of Drakulon’s rivers, and though the “water” revived him, his time underground had driven him mad.

Tristan slaughtered the astronauts and tracked Vampirella down, blaming her for his current state and accusing her of corrupting him. Whether she was terrified by Tristan swearing he’d kill her (the 1972 Annual) or that he’d survive on his own by becoming a bloodsucking monster (the reprints in issues 46 & 100), Vampirella realized she could no longer live on Drakulon (either because Tristan's hatred made her realize there was no reason to remain there or because she feared becoming like him. Again, it depends on the printing) and took the astronauts’ ship back to Earth.

Vampirella tried to keep a low profile on this strange, new world, and during her time there she discovered humans had blood inside them. Left with no other choice, she became a huntress that fed on their kind while moving from place to place, but during her first time on a plane, a bolt of lightning sent it crashing into the mountains of Colorado. Vampirella survived and wandered into a nearby town, where she was nursed back to health by a man named Ethan Shroud.

Though her wings had to be amputated due to her injuries, Ethan was able to remedy her daily need for blood by creating a substitute serum that lasted 24 hours. However, she soon learned that Ethan wasn’t as benevolent as he appeared. He was actually a high-ranking warlock in a cult dedicated to the god Chaos. Ethan saw potential in recruiting her, but she refused and fought him off, ending in his death.

With nowhere else to go, Vampirella began wandering America until she came across a carnival and met the illusionist Mordecai Pendragon. After helping him against another servant of Chaos, the two became business partners, with Vampi using her Drakulonian shapeshifting to help Pen in his magic shows.

But her past soon caught up with her when the blind psychic Conrad Van Helsing learned his brother Kurt had been caught in a plane crash in the mountains. Kurt was found drained of all his blood with two holes in his neck, and Conrad’s senses warned him that a vampire’s aura was around the corpse. Conrad tracked the culprit alongside his son Adam, but when they finally found Vampirella, they learned she wasn’t as bad as they initially assumed.

Despite initially blaming her for Kurt’s death, over time Conrad and Adam became more friendly toward Vampirella (in part from learning Kurt was actually drained by a different vampire). Together they fought numerous demons, undead, robots, and aliens and gained new allies like the time-traveler Rook or the shapeshifting Pantha.

During these adventures, Vampirella would briefly pursue a career in acting, but she could only endure so many obsessed monsters and serial killers before calling it quits. She also started a relationship with Adam, but they eventually broke up when she realized she couldn’t move on from Tristan’s death or the blame she felt for it.

Eight years after arriving on Earth, Vampirella returned to Drakulon to find that the planet’s vegetation and water were restored, yet its people remained dead. As she traveled through the desolate cities, she came across Tristan’s corpse and his dying letter. His sanity had returned in his final days, and he now regretted that he could no longer be there for his wife or take back what he said. Still, he knew she would eventually return and, in the hopes of one day reuniting, included a vial of his cells to clone him.

While these cells were destroyed in a fight with a maddened Pantha, Tristan would be cloned by the sorceress Yorlak to act as a sleeper agent for Chaos. Upon reuniting with Vampirella, the clone rekindled their relationship, and his love allowed him to overcome his programming and kill Yorlak. But much like the original, he couldn’t cope with taking a life and fled, believing it was better that Vampirella think he died than live with a corrupted, hollow mockery.

Vampirella was alone once more, and with her husband gone, all she had left was her friends Pendragon, Conrad, and Adam. After his relationship with Pantha fizzled out, Adam and Vampirella tried to patch things up, but a being called the Walker of Worlds put a wedge between them.

Under threat of Adam’s death, Vampirella tricked the Walker into leaving by pretending to be so shallow that she didn’t care about her closest friend’s death. Unfortunately, this ruse worked too well. Despite knowing her for all these years, this one moment was enough to make Adam believe she really didn’t care about him, and their relationship was damaged once again.

And sadly, that’s where the story ends. Vampirella and Adam have broken up, her relationship with Pantha is rocky at best, and their battle with Chaos never really got resolved. It’s really underwhelming, but that’s how it is… at least for this Vampirella.

Thanks to Warren Publishing going bankrupt in 1983, many of their assets had to be sold off and were picked up by Harris Publications. This included reviving Vampirella in the 90s to some massive highs and horrific lows, but you’ll see what we mean next time.

Personality

In her early appearances, Vampirella was a carefree girl who enjoyed contests and challenges and had a complete disregard for human life, treating them more like entertainment and meals than people. Her dialogue in stories and narration as the magazine’s host were often accompanied by really bad puns, rhyming, alliteration, and wordplay. Her lame puns occasionally reappear after issue 8’s soft reboot, though it’s rare.

Following the soft reboot in issue 8, Vampirella becomes more fleshed out. As a Drakulonian, she has a natural bloodlust she’s constantly trying to keep in check thanks to her society instilling the sanctity of life and her own appreciation of humans. She’ll go as far as to throw herself out of a plane if it means she can avoid feeding on those nearby!

Under most circumstances she’ll do what she can to save anyone in front of her, even her enemies, and will only kill when there’s no other choice or if someone’s life has become an unbearable hell, but she’ll still be wracked with guilt after. Even when a psychic attempted to brainwash her into killing Pen, she broke out of it almost immediately because of a subconscious block against taking lives. However, this block completely vanishes when she’s in the throes of bloodlust. She’s killed muggers, serial killers, assassins, and Chaos’ cultists without feeling any remorse or guilt after, as she’s accepted that it’s inevitable for her to kill while in this state. Still, even with this acceptance, she refuses to consciously take a life in cold blood.

She has a strong sense of justice. She refused to let the cult of Chaos slaughter people to appease their god, was disgusted by the hedonistic Zymer Z. Sull making women play Russian Roulette with spiked wine, and refused to kill a man in cold blood after he’d supposedly killed Pantha.

During her time on Earth, she’s done her best to adapt to life and become more human, but no matter how many years she spent, she still felt trapped and like a stranger who doesn’t belong. Upon meeting another surviving Drakulonian, Dracula, they briefly fell in love, but she later realized her feelings were just homesickness. When she finally had the option to return to Drakulon, she decided to remain on Earth since Adam and Pen helped her realize it was her new home. Near the end of her series she even admitted she’s willing to risk dying to save Earth.

Despite usually appearing strong-willed, Vampirella’s secretly haunted by nightmares of her many fears and regrets: losing herself to her bloodlust, her sadness over Tristan’s death, and the horror she feels she puts her friends through. Her love for her late husband is so strong that it prevents her from committing herself to anyone else. Even when Adam proposed to her, despite wanting nothing more than marry to him, she still rejected him because she couldn’t get over Tristan’s death

When she finally did get over Tristan’s death and they tried to repair their relationship, they both agreed it was too late and it would be foolish to get back together. And any hope of patching things up was completely tarnished by the fiasco with the Walker of Worlds, where Vampirella’s ruse of not caring about him worked so well that Adam thought it was true and wasn’t sure if they could patch things up.

In terms of misc traits, she’ll often say “Satyr and Circe” (the name of Drakulon’s twin suns) when shocked and can occasionally get sarcastic and snippy when annoyed. She also likes saunas because the heat reminds her of Drakulon.

Experience

In her eight years on Earth, Vampirella has battled a wide variety of foes, including monsters, demons, ghouls, ghosts, and mummies. She’s killed two werewolves, battled a group of demons, killed a dozen assassinsfrom across the globe in less than a minute, and done the same to half a dozen feral, bloodlusted clones. She’s overcome the challenges of several Hindu gods to reclaim Adam’s soul, including fighting them on the astral plane. And despite being driven into a feral bloodlust, she was still able to defeat an experienced terrorist in CQC.

She’s said to have skill beyond most men on Earth and spirit that can never passively submit to death. She’s particularly skilled hypnosis, with the narration saying her hypnotic powers are beyond those of mortal men and none are more adroit in the Drakulonian art of telepathic hypnosis than her.

She’s quickly adjusted after a sorcerer caused her and Conrad to swap physiologies and powers (blindness included) and defeated him. And when the Walker of Worlds threatened to kill Adam, Vampi put on a ruse of indifference so convincing even Adam bought it and permanently strained their relationship.

Arsenal

Costume

A standard Drakulonian fighting strip. While it doesn’t offer much protection, the gold arm band is sharp enough to cut through a plexiglass cell and tough enough to block a massive stake without breaking

Claws

With her razor-sharp fingers, Vampirella can slice through flesh with ease.

Substitute Serum

An artificial blood formula created by Ethan Shroud, the substitute serum is used by Vampirella once every 24 hours to ensure she doesn’t fall victim to her vampiric urges. This concentrated mix fills her with the equivalent of multiple victims’ blood, and it can also restore the strength of Drakulonians and earth-based vampires, though the boost is inferior to the one from drinking blood.

While we’re never shown just how many she has, she has several on hand just in case.

Machine Gun

After her friends were seemingly killed in front of her, Vampirella picked up a nearby machine gun and used it against their attackers, but it quickly ran out.

Skills

Martial Arts

Was trained in Drakarate and learned martial arts on Earth, which she combined to take down a group of feral clones and a terrorist leader.

Endurance/Pain Tolerance

Thanks to her alien DNA, Vampirella has endurance far beyond that of an average human and can run or fly for extended periods of time without tiring. Vampirella has stayed conscious after having both eyes gouged out by a knife, and could keep fighting after being drained of massive amounts of blood.

Climbing

Can climb walls with the adroitness of a lizard and is skilled at climbing rocks.

Powers

Drakulonian Physiology

As a Drakulonian (also called Drakulonne, vampiri, and vampyre), Vampirella isn’t a traditional “living dead” vampire, but an alien that feeds on blood like how humans do water. By piercing the jugular with their fangs, a Drakulonian can feed on humans, animals, zombies, demons, or monsters to boost their strength and healing abilities. This must be done every 24 hours to keep up their strength, though they can survive for upwards of 3 days without feeding.

Drakulonians’ intelligence and physical performance are honed to the highest degree, and their tissues, muscles, and nerves are all tougher and harder than a human’s. Their blood is compatible with all types, and their metabolisms make them taste disgusting to other aliens, leaving them without any natural predators. They can live, breathe, smell, and communicate underwater with no problem as long as they drink blood every six hours. They also possess retractable wings, which Vampirella used to have until they were amputated by Ethan Shroud’s surgery.

Unlike Earth-based vampires, Drakulonian bites don’t infect victims with vampirism. They only kill them. However, the bite itself doesn’t need to be fatal, as Vampirella can use it as a warning or break it off early to feed on a small portion of blood and leave her victim half-conscious.

Metamorphosis

One of Vampirella’s most used powers is her species’ natural birthright to transform her molecules and turn into a vampire bat. While in this form she can talk, fly for hours without rest, has night vision, can use her fangs to deliver a fatal bite, or revert to human mid-flight to tackle an opponent. The only catch is she needs to maintain her concentration in this form, so if she gets too injured, is knocked out, or her thoughts become unfocused, she’ll revert back.

Telepathic Hypnosis

Another power that comes native to Drakulonnes, but none are more adroit in their art of telepathic hypnosis than Vampirella. By staring into another person’s eyes or entering their minds with telepathy, Vampirella can issue hypnotic commands that force others to obey her, subtly influence their actions, remove memories, make them see reason or attack themselves, interrogate them, or make them see vivid illusions of their worst fears. As shown by other users, Drakulonian and telepathic hypnosis can also be used to summon lifelike illusions of demons and dragons or alter your appearance to other people.

Invisibility

A power only shown in her first appearance, Vampirella was able to turn invisible to sneak up on some astronauts, though she couldn’t maintain it for long because of her starvation.

Extrasensory Perception

Vampirella has shown several times that she can sense the presence of evil and oncoming danger.

Fourth Wall Awareness

As the host of her anthology magazine, Vampirella will often introduce the stories, comment on their plots and endings, and has even shown up in the middle to narrate them. The early issues also had her answer the letters page in-character. It became less prominent over time, though she does break the fourth wall at the end of her story in issue 72.

Regeneration

While not as notable as her other powers, Vampirella possesses slight regenerative abilities that let her heal from a shot to the head over the course of two days. And she can speed up this healing process by drinking blood.

These regenerative properties also extend to her own blood. By giving a transfusion to even the weakest elderly man, he becomes younger and stronger both physically and mentally, though it only lasts for a few hours. This can even be used to help a man out of a coma or stave off chemically-induced leprosy.

Bloodlusted State

If she hasn’t fed on blood for over 24 hours, is weakened from blood transfusions, drinks poisoned blood, is put under extreme stress, has her appetite increased by magic, or gets injected with cocaine, Vampirella will become overwhelmed by her lust for blood, either becoming a feral, animalistic berserker or cognizant and madly obsessed with draining her prey. Regardless of mindset, this drastically increases her strength at the cost of losing control. While she can still recognize her friends and sometimes retain control over her actions (albeit with extreme difficulty), she will attack anyone else indiscriminately, including children.

While active, her hunting instincts become sharper, and she retains enough intellect to use her martial arts training up close and use others as meat shields.

Resistances

Cold temperatures:
Could walk around in snowy mountains while in her costume and is unaffected by the cold.

Electricity:
Is only knocked out by an electrified window whose electricity could total a bull elephant and says a voltage that would kill a normal human only stuns her.

Vampirism:
Unable to be infected by Dracula’s bite.

Madness Manipulation, Age Manipulation, and Death Manipulation:
Thanks to their alien heritage, Vampirella and Dracula can look at Chaos’ true form, which a normal human wouldn’t be able to without going so mad they age to death or commit suicide She’s also able to look at a djinn’s true form, which kills any human that looks at it.

Mind Control and Telepathy:
Has multiple instances of resisting mind control and telepathy

Scaling

Vampirella’s regularly worked alongside Pantha and shown comparable strength to her, even knocking her out more than once when they’ve fought (See Strength).

Intelligence

Feats

  • Was the only survivor of Drakulon’s great drought and discovered how to pilot NASA’s ship back to Earth
  • Has helped Pen and the Van Helsings battle numerous monsters and supernatural threats
  • Passed the Conjuress’ morality test by overcoming her Drakulonian instincts and sparing Dracula
  • Killed Voudou, Sally Sue Cartier, Sara and Patrick Granville, Zymer Z. Sull, the London Headhunter, her clones, Y’ayn, and many demons and worshippers of Chaos
  • Gained American citizenship after assassinating the head of a white slavery ring
  • Became a successful Hollywood star (to the hatred of MANY fans)
  • Discovered her past life as Cleopatra
  • Saved Adam’s soul from being stolen by cultists
  • Saved Adam from being killed by the Wanderer of Worlds at the cost of their relationship

Weaknesses

Going a long time without feeding will leave her weak and tired and eventually prove fatal. Her feeding only works on blood, so liquids like transmission fluid or neurofibrillary deuterium isocyanide won’t work. Her hypnosis is only effective on living beings, so robots are immune. And despite her blood’s regenerative properties, she can’t regrow her eyes on her own, so if she loses them she’ll have to use her powers she could summon and other senses to make up for it.

Vampirella can’t shapeshift while bound or restrained, and attempting it will risk snapping a ligament or dislocating her shoulder, though there have been some exceptions to this. She’s been knocked out by blunt force to the head, sedatives, poisoned food, spiked drinks, sleeping gas, knockout gas, smoke bombs, chloroform multiple times, and powerful spells. Her bat form can have its echolocation messed with by gunshots, and she’s nearly died from been strangled and drowned in the past. Magic can affect her the same as anyone else, leaving her vulnerable to things like a “spell of crosse switchery” swapping her physiology and powers with Conrad’s.

Despite resisting mind control, she’s still vulnerable to possession, can be tricked by illusions or telepathic hypnosis, and was unable to resist an incubus causing her to fall in love with him.
